Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest of the children of the singer Dionne Warswick as well as gospel singer Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew up in a musical household. As a child she was a singer in the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. When she reached the age of 15, Houston had sung professionally backing vocals with her mother for Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. She went on to provide the backing vocals of Jermaine and Lou Rawls as well as her mother, and also did a brief stint as models on the front cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. The high quality of her performance as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material caught the eye of major record labels, including Arista, with which she signed her contract in 1982, where she stayed the rest of her career. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and quickly became the top-selling album by the debut artist. On the album, she came out with several hits like Saving All My Love for You How Will You Know That You Give Good Love and The Greatest Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US Top Ones consecutively. It was even better than the Beatles. Album was sold out in US 3,000,000 copies before it reached 25,000,000 copies world-wide. This brought her first of her six Grammy Awards. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles What Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her debut album. But it was it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most well-known artist. While the film wasn't very well received, nor did her performance, the music of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the number one spot on both singles and albums charts in the United States for a period of time. The album sold over 44 million copies. When she welcomed her daughter Bobbi, Brown married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. At this point, her documented addiction to drugs began. By 1996, she was using drugs daily.
