Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical household on August 9, 1963, at Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. In her early years, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. By the time she turned 15, Houston had sung professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother in Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly was a model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. Also, she provided backing vocals to Jermaine and Lou Rawls. The quality of her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several major record companies including Arista and Arista, which she signed her contract in 1982 and was with them throughout the course of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for a new artist in the year 1985. A number of songs from the album were hit, including The Most Beautiful Love of All and Saving All My Love. The album itself sold three million copies in its debut year in the US as well as achieve a worldwide sales of 25 million, earning her the first of her six Grammys.
